This volume brings together many of Voltaire's most controversial
reflections on religion and philosophy. In "Le Philosophe ignorant"
Voltaire summarises his doubts about the philosophers of his age
and theories of systematization, seeking to show the limits of
metaphysics. "L'Examen important de milord Bolingbroke" is a
polemical work which uses the excuse of being a 'translation' of a
letter from the English Lord Bolingbroke to diffuse Voltaire's own
radical views. "Andre Destouches a Siam" is a satirical dialogue
between a French musician and a Siamese bureaucrat, presenting a
'utopian' society in which the justice system is arbitrary, based
on archaic traditions and religious fanaticism. "Les Questions de
Zapata" was published as a pamphlet, purportedly by a professor of
theology in Salamanca, on the inconsistencies of the Old and New
Testament.
MATLAB®, now the industry-standard engineering language for computation, analysis, and visualization, continues to evolve in its capabilities. Version 6.x incorporated several major improvements, including significant enhancements to its graphics features, such as transparencies, increased 3-D visualization, and an improved rendering engine.
The bestselling Graphics and GUIs with MATLAB has been fully revised to reflect MATLAB version 6. The third edition also features a number of improvements in both content and organization that ensure its readers get the optimum level of detail and best possible instruction.
New in the Third Edition:
· Full updates that reflect MATLAB 6.x enhancements · Expanded discussions on 2-D and 3-D graphics · New chapters on good GUI design and data visualization techniques · Volume visualizations · Updated language commands · Deeper coverage of programming techniques, such as data structures and callback techniques · Exercises in each chapter · Additional examples and updated illustrations
Graphics and GUIs with MATLAB, Third Edition retains the comprehensible, almost conversational tutorial style that made its predecessors so popular but offers a streamlined organization and deeper coverage that make this edition an even better way to acquire or increase proficiency in using MATLAB to its fullest graphics capabilities.
Since the establishment of the North American Free Trade Agreement
(NAFTA) tensions concerning immigration trends and policies, which
continued to escalate at the turn of the millennium resulted in
revised national security policies in Mexico, Canada, and the
United States. These tensions have catalyzed the three governments
to rethink their political and economic agendas. While national
feminist scholarship in and on these respective countries continue
to predominate, since NAFTA, there has been increasing feminist
inquiry in a North American regional frame. Less has been done to
understand challenges of the hegemonies of nation, region, and
empire in this context and to adequately understand the meaning of
(im)mobility in people's lives as well as the (im)mobilities of
social theories and movements like feminism. Drawing from current
feminist scholarship on intimacy and political economy and using
three main frameworks: Fortressing Writs/Exclusionary Rights,
Mobile Bodies/Immobile Citizenships, and Bordered/Borderland
Identities, a handpicked group of established and rising feminist
scholars methodically examine how the production of feminist
knowledge has occurred in this region. The economic, racial, gender
and sexual normativities that have emerged and/or been
reconstituted in neoliberal and securitized North America further
reveal the depth of regional and global restructuring.
Concrete durability in climates where freezing and thawing occurs
is a continuing problem. It is particularly acute for highway and
bridge structures, where de-icing salts are used to combat the
effects of frost, snow and ice. These salts can cause damage to
concrete and accelerate corrosion of reinforcements. This book
presents the latest international research on this area, with
contributions from North America and Europe which were presented at
an international RILEM workshop.
Sulfate Attack on Concrete provides a comprehensive reference to
this important subject. It covers: a short history of concrete
deterioration due to sulfate attack, the origin of sulfates in
concrete, the importance of appropriate concrete processing, forms
and physical-chemical mechanisms of concrete deterioration due to
sulfates, preventative measures, standardisation and numerous case
histories. This book is an essential reference for industry
practitioners involved in concrete science and engineering, and
also for academics and researchers of materials science and
concrete technology.
How did the academy react to the rise, dominance, and ultimate fall
of Germany's Third Reich? Did German professors of the humanities
have to tell themselves lies about their regime's activities or its
victims to sleep at night? Did they endorse the regime? Or did they
look the other way, whether out of deliberate denial or out of fear
for their own personal safety? The Betrayal of the Humanities: The
University during the Third Reich is a collection of groundbreaking
essays that shed light on this previously overlooked piece of
history. The Betrayal of the Humanities accepts the regrettable
news that academics and intellectuals in Nazi Germany betrayed the
humanities, and explores what went wrong, what occurred at the
universities, and what happened to the major disciplines of the
humanities under National Socialism. The Betrayal of the Humanities
details not only how individual scholars, particular departments,
and even entire universities collaborated with the Nazi regime but
also examines the legacy of this era on higher education in
Germany. In particular, it looks at the peculiar position of many
German scholars in the post-war world having to defend their own
work, or the work of their mentors, while simultaneously not
appearing to accept Nazism.
